Comfort Me with Apples by Ruth Reichl – Bee Readin'

Comfort Me with Apples by Ruth Reichl

I love food, cooking and writing, and Ruth Reichl is a woman after my own heart.

Comfort Me with Apples is a book I sunk my teeth into and loved from beginning to end. The story begins in 1978 where Ruth is living in a commune in Berkeley, California, married and beginning life as a restaurant critic and food writer.

Sounds like an interesting life.  Ruth begins to travel the world, eating her way through countries and writing about the experiences, her job sounds like the perfect job and a dream come true.  Life is full of adventure, but….

her marriage begins to crumble. There are affairs tangled into the excitement of meeting famous chefs, attending high profile restaurant openings, making new friends in the culinary industry and traveling.

Ruth is a bit wacky and wild, but you still will love her.  Throughout the book I felt like I was sitting having a cup of tea with a friend, enjoying girlfriend conversation.  She shares recipes throughout the book and most of them sound incredibly scrumptious and I can’t wait to try a few.

I have watched Ruth as a judge on a few cooking shows and she is truly a fun and likeable person and I found her books to be the same as she is, fun, wacky, wild and dripping in food stories.

As we chew our way through the middle, there is another man, a job offer from the L.A Times as their food critic, a tragedy that pulls at your heart strings as she tries to adopt a child.  Her life is fascinating, full of great stories about her wonderful career and fascinating friends.

Comfort Me with Apples and Garlic and Sapphires were chosen for book club and I was concerned about reading 2 books in one month along with my own personal reads.  It was easy to get through them both and I am going to review and chat with you about Garlic and Sapphires next.  As I was reading Comfort Me with Apples I realized it was a follow on to Tender at the Bone.  You won’t have a problem if you haven’t read Tender at the Bone first in getting hooked to Comfort Me with Apples, Ruth Reichl does a really good job at closing her books out, sometimes with a hook for the next one.  I hope to read them all as I love her style of writing.

Our book club event was a blast and I will fill you about that when we chat about Garlic and Sapphires.

I will meet you back her next week and we will chat more about books, food and fun.

Until then,

Bee Readin’
