Curious Charms of Arthur Pepper by Phaedra Patrick – Bee Readin'

Curious Charms of Arthur Pepper by Phaedra Patrick

Happy Tuesday!  I have been lazy lately and not getting much reading done.  Bee’ing a little sluggish on the book I am currently reading. I’m having trouble getting in to it, which is a surprise as it is written by an author I really enjoy.

But I do want to share a book that I loved and our book club just finished. The Curious Charms of Arthur Pepper by Phaedra Patrick is gem.  Once in awhile a book comes a long that you can’t put down and then it hangs in your memory long after you have finished the last page. The Curious Charms of Arthur Pepper is one of those books for me. I couldn’t put it down and couldn’t wait to pick it back up.

Arthur Pepper reminds me a bit of Ove from the book A Man Called Ove, by Fredrik Backman.

Arthur is retired,  his wife has passed and he has lost the compass guiding his life.  He is stuck in his routine, he hides from the neighbors and isn’t very social, and is sadly detached from his children.

A year has passed since Arthur’s wife passed away, and he knows the time has come to go through her personal items.  Starting in the closet with her clothes and shoes, memories come back to him. He reaches down to pull out her boots one feels a little different, and he sticks his hand into one of the boots.  Arthur has no idea that what is hidden in those boots will change his life. He feels a box and finds a beautiful velvet box that he doesn’t recognize.  Opening the box he sees a beautiful charm bracelet that he doesn’t remember ever. He doesn’t believe he has ever laid eyes on the bracelet and he tries to remember seeing her wear it and has no memory of it at all.

This bracelet will set Arthur on a journey to discover the meaning of each charm and who and where they came from. He is shocked to discover that she may have had a life he knows nothing about.

The discovery of the bracelet forces Arthur to leave the comforts of his daily routine, his home and he will be forced to interact with strangers and travel to areas he doesn’t know. His life has been steady, calm, filled with love, not adventure.

The Curious Charms of Arthur Pepper will have you smiling, laughing, shedding a few tears and rooting for him on his journeys.  I fell in love with the character of Arthur, he reminded me a bit of my grandpa.  A few of Arthur’s adventures may seem a little far-fetched, but it doesn’t matter.  Phaedra’s writing will draw you in and have you feeling that you are watching Arthur from a distance, laughing and wanting to reach out to help him.

If you are reading The Curious Charms of Arthur Pepper for book club you won’t find any formal book club questions for the book. Below are 2 questions that we used for our discussion and it opened the door for a fun and rich discussion.  I hope it helps.

  1. Which charm and story was your favorite and why?
  2.  If you left a charm bracelet behind, what charms would be on that bracelet?

I would love to hear from you after you read the book.  Let me know which charm and story is your favorite and why?

I hope you read The Curious Charms of Arthur Pepper, it is a fun and beautiful story.  You can’t help but love Arthur. The book may have you asking yourself, What would you do if you found a piece of jewelry that belonged to your spouse or significant other; A beautiful piece that you don’t remember ever seeing, or seeing them wear? There is a story behind the piece, but unfortunately they are gone and you can’t ask them, what would you do? Would you let it go, or are you curious like Arthur and determined to find the answers?

Until next time,

  1. To answer your question, I would probably not even know where to begin to search if I found a piece of jewelry. I’d probably ask family members of my husband, and our kids. If they had no answers, I would leave it be. Sounds intriguing. I’ll add it to my list.

    1. Janet,
Hi, I loved the book. Reading is so subjective and not everyone likes the same things. There is mystery and you find Arthur changing and intent on discovering his wife’s past. Let me know what you think if you read it.
