Memoir of the Sunday Brunch by Julia Pandl

Memoir of the Sunday Brunch by Julia Pandl has been hanging on my Kindle for a long time, and it was time to devour the pages.  I didn’t read any reviews on the book, didn’t know much about it, but loved the cover and title, who doesn’t love Sunday Brunch?

Memoir of the Sunday Brunch is a funny, coming of age story of growing up with 9 sibling and two parents living in the Midwest in much simpler times.  Times when kids roamed their neighborhoods, pranks were a common occurrence, chores were handed out and moving was part of life.

Julia tells her story and what a story.  Growing up in a huge family where church was a priority and her father owned a restaurant and each child had to take their turn working and working Sunday Brunch.  She had to stand on a bucket and peel shrimp until her fingers were frozen, she had to pick up trash in the parking lot, working her way up to running food stations during brunch.

Julia tells the tales of being a kid in a large family, moving and leaving friends, the conversations she has with her father on the drives to the restaurant on Sunday mornings and the lessons she learned from her father and the beliefs instilled in her from her mother.

I thoroughly enjoyed her stories, could relate in growing up with some of the same shenanigans and then to watch as a silent observer as her parents faced health issues and the strength and support they all had from each other.

One minute she has me laughing hysterically, and then tears silently sliding down the cheek.  Memoir of the Sunday Brunch is a fun read and it brought back some long lost childhood memories for me.  I can imagine sitting with her over a cup of tea and listening to her talk about her childhood.  Her quirky sense of humor is a breath of fresh air and the book was pure joy to read.  I hope she will write another, I will be anxiously waiting to join her on the journey.

Memoir of the Sunday Brunch would make a fun read for book club and to meet over Sunday Brunch with Mimosas would be perfect.

      1. Janet,
Let me know what you think. I had started the book, couldn’t get into it, stopped reading and then went back to it and loved it. Guess it was just my mindset at the time. 🙂
