Still Life by Louise Penny – Bee Readin'

Still Life by Louise Penny

Do you love a good mystery?  Mysteries are not a genre that I read much and I don’t know why because I like a great mystery.  My curiosity gets the best of me if it is a great mystery novel and I have fun trying to figure out who dunnit before the end of the book.

Still Life by Louise Penny was chosen for our August book club party and it was a joy to read.  The story takes place in the tiny village of Three Pines in Quebec.  A village of artist’s and hunter’s where everyone knows your name.

Within the first pages we find Jane Neal lying in the woods just steps from her home and she is dead, but is her death a hunting accident or murder?

When Jane’s body is found, the authorities come swooping in from Montreal and Inspector Armand Gamache is the head guy.  He and his team are determined to solve the mystery.  But to figure out what happened, we must go back to the beginning.

Inspector Gamache meets the people of Three Pines and tries to learn about each one connected to Jane.  Life is simple, daily routines are cemented into their histories.  Jane is quirky, yet loved by everyone and Clara is her best friend.  Yet Jane never lets anyone past the mudroom in her home, not even Clara…..why?

When Clara learns it is Jane that was found in the woods dead, she can’t breathe, part of her soul is missing and she is devastated.  Her husband doesn’t know how to comfort her or take away the pain.

As the investigation continues, Inspector Gamache determines that this was no hunting accident, but who?

Three Pines seems idyllic, but you will learn there are secrets to this little village and as each is revealed you will be surprised.  Louise Penny does a fantastic job in vividly writing this book.  She keeps your attention through all the twists and turns.  She spills a drop of information which leads you to think you may know what happened and then she quickly mops up the drop and spills a few more, leading you in a different direction.

Once the secrets are spilled and all is revealed, you will be shocked.

Still Life is a page turner and a fairly easy book to read, but keeps you guessing along the way.

What a fun Book Club event, it was casual and arranged like a French Bistro.  When you read the book, you will connect the dots of the French Bistro.  As always, there was wine and cafe au lait.  We had a variety of french tarts and pastries.  The perfect desserts and bites for a hot evening.
