The Light Between Oceans; A Novel by M.L. Stedman

Happy end of August!

Most of you probably have already read this beautiful novel since it came out in 2012.  Sometimes it takes me a while to get to a book, I have so many on the list.  The movie is coming out soon and I had the opportunity to see it a bit early, so stopped what I was reading, jumped over to The Light Between Oceans to finish it before seeing the film.  Whew, I got it done, but it was a close.

If you read the book did you love it?

For those of you that haven’t read the book, here is a brief summary.

The Light Between Oceans is set in Australia, Tom Sherbourne has returned from the war and is considered a hero by some.  His mother left the family as a child and there is no love loss between Tom, his father and brother.  He really is on his own.  Tom is looking to escape and just wants silence, you know the kind that leaves you feeling as you are the only person on the planet.  He applies for a job as a light keeper on the island of Janus, 100 miles off Australia’s rugged coast.

The supply boat arrives once a season, leave is granted once a year if that, otherwise you are left on your own to tend the light.  Tom meets a beautiful young woman while in town, they exchange letters when he returns to the island and he sees her on his next trip to town. They marry and Tom takes Isabel to the island with him.  Struggling to have a family, Isabel and Tom will be tested and life for this young couple seems quite unfair.  When an unexpected turn of events forces them to make a choice.  A choice will be made and one of them can’t live with that choice.

Waves come crashing and a storm blows in to their lives, ripping them apart, decisions are made, but are they the right decisions?  The moral issue raised in this story will have you in conflict.  You will understand Isabel’s side and when Hannah’s story is told, you want to wrap your arms around her and make it alright.

The story is one of love, choices, and understanding how cruel and unfair life can be at times.  Many have said they didn’t like the ending, I was fine with it and don’t believe it could end any other way, you will have closure.

The book may have you questioning yourself as to what you would do in that position, would you make the same choice Isabel and Tom make?  This book stuck with me for quite a while and I loved it.

If you go to buy or download the book, you will find a different cover than what I have posted.  They have changed it to the movie photo, which I understand, but don’t like.  I love book covers, and appreciate the creativity of the book cover designer, so wanted to honor them with the original cover.

For a review of the movie and a comparison with the book…

The movie is beautiful.  The scenery and Cinematography are exquisite.  The movie definitely follows the book closer than most.  If you have read, you will see a few discrepancies, however they are minor.  Books are so detailed and tell the story, that is why we love them right?  With the movie, you just can’t include everything, it would be a 5 hour movie event and I don’t know about you, but I can’t sit that long.

The actors, Michael Fassbender, Alicia Vikander and Rachel Weisz are perfectly cast in their roles and bring the story to life from the pages of the book to the big screen.

I’d love to hear back from you if and when you read the book as to your thoughts and if you liked it or not.  If you see the movie, please share with me too.

Until next time,

  1. LOVED the book! The angst and the passions were so clearly defined … I could feel each character.

Didn’t love the movie … felt it was a bit choppy although it covered all the important bases. It was gloomy and from where we were sitting in the theater (maybe too close to the speakers), it was hard to hear the dialog. But it still left us with lots to discuss on our way home. My husband also didn’t love the movie but he hadn’t read the book … he swears he does not want to see another movie with a lighthouse in it!

    1. Janet, it really is a beautiful story and the movie was quite good as well. I know I keep adding to your reading list, hope you get to them all soon. Take Care!
