Eleanor Oliphant Is Completely Fine by Gail Honeyman – Bee Readin'

Eleanor Oliphant Is Completely Fine by Gail Honeyman

A few months back I attended a presentation with friends at a local library.  Several large publishing houses had sales staff in to give presentations on new books being released.

Eleanor Oliphant Is Completely Fine was a book they talked about and recommended, especially if you had read Britt Marie Was Here by Fredrik Backman and loved it.

Eleanor is Gail Honeyman’s first novel.  She wrote the book while working full time, which I find surprising as the book is so well written.

Eleanor Oliphant Is Completely Fine, but she isn’t.

I loved this book for many reasons.  It is not a light read, it is a heavy story with some of the British/Scottish humor scattered throughout the story, which I so enjoy.

Eleanor is a complex soul.  She has buried reality, all emotions, tragedy and abuse deep within her soul.  She is socially inept, her coworkers consider her to be weird and they steer clear of her.  Eleanor lives alone with her weekends spent deep in the depths of her vodka bottle and frozen pizza.  She has no friends, was bounced from foster home to foster home throughout her childhood, has physical facial scars and no filter, she says exactly what is on her mind.  She painfully talks to Mummy on Wednesday nights and dreads that conversation every week. When Raymond, a clumsy, unkempt IT guy from her work enters her life, he will befriend Eleanor.  The two are faced with an event and having to make a quick decision, which will slowly pull Eleanor from her walled and closed world.

Raymond sticks by Eleanor, pushing her to be better, yet so kind and patient with her always.  She will be forced to face her demons.  Raymond is her hero and will save her life in many ways.

As the layers of Eleanor are slowly and painfully peeled away, you will find yourself stunned by the revelations she makes of her horrific childhood.

Gail Honeyman’s writing style is brilliant.  I felt as though I was walking in Eleanor’s shadow throughout the book.  Her journey is painfully sad and I wanted to wrap my arms around this broken soul.

A great book in my eyes is one that makes you really feel something.  Pulling you into the pages and world of the story.  Eleanor Oliphant Is Completely Fine was that book for me.  I thought about it long after I had finished it.

Reese Witherspoon has the rights to make Eleanor into a film through her new production company.  I can hardly wait to see how she brings Eleanor to life on the screen.

Let me know what you think once you have finished the book.

Until next time,

  1. I loved this book as well. Just so good in so many ways. I didn’t know Reese was going to make it a movie and I am glad. (This is Janie’s friend in Chattanooga)

    1. Hi Victoria, thanks for reading. I’m so glad you loved it too. I was iffy about it when I first started it and boy it quickly turned for me and I couldn’t put it down. I can hardly wait for the film. Reese Witherspoon did a great job with the book Wild and Liane Moriarty’s Big Little Lies. I’m hoping she does Eleanor justice.
