Firefly Lane by Kristin Hannah – Bee Readin'

Firefly Lane by Kristin Hannah

I can’t tell you how much I loved this book.  Kristin Hannah has quickly become one of my favorite authors and I just can’t get enough of her books.  Her style of writing is like having a conversation with a friend and her ability to tell a story is rare.

A few years ago I chose Homefront for book club and enjoyed that book so much.  Back in April I reviewed Fly Away and as you will read on that blog post, the book was touching and fantastic.  Part way through Fly Away, I realized it was the sequel to Firefly Lane but, I was to far in to stop and read Firefly Lane first.

I started Firefly Lane and can’t begin to tell you how much I enjoyed this book.  Kristin Hannah takes us to the beginning of Tully and Kate’s friendship.  Two young girls who each struggle  in middle school to find their identity and where they fit in.  Kate doesn’t have friends and suffers with a few mean girls and Tully has been abandoned by her mother several times and is just looking for friends and acceptance.

The girls become friends on Firefly Lane and quickly become inseparable, going from Kate and Tully to KateandTully, all one name as they are joined together forever. The two build a friendship that will carry them through the rough school years, college, men and dating and into adulthood.  But, the friendship isn’t always perfect, each is damaged and they face betrayal and different paths in life.  One has a brilliant career and the other chooses something completely different for her life and you wonder, can their friendship remain in tact?

Throughout this beautiful story of friendship that knows no boundaries.  Each of them is willing to be there for each other no matter the cost. The book reminds us  of friends and the importance of girlfriends to get us through life.

My recommendation is that you don’t do what I did and read the last book first.  Start with the first book, Firefly Lane and have Fly Away on hand so you can start it as soon as you finish Firefly Lane and have some tissue on hand.

See you next week to chat about Still Life by Louise Penny.  Book Club is tonight and I can’t wait.
