Happy July – Bee Readin'

Happy July

Happy July! Hope everyone had a safe and fun 4th of July. I also hope you are lost deep into some fun summer read.

I am going to step out on a limb and write about something I’ve not done on the blog before and give you all a few recommendations on children’s books. So let’s get to it….

Charlotte’s Web by E. B. White: Good for ages 8 to 12, Grades 3-7
I read this book way back in middle school, more years ago than I like to count. I chose to read it for my classic book this year. I really want to urge you to go back and choose a classic and re-read it, as an adult you may get more value out of it than you did as a child.
When Fern learns her father intends to kill a baby pig, the runt of the litter, she spares his life and names him Wilbur. She nurtures this little pig and as he grows he is moved on to another farm and Fern visits him everyday. When Charlotte the spider makes her home near Wilbur, she too will save his life and Wilbur will pay it forward in later years. This truly is a story of love, nurturing, friendship, acceptance for being different and compassion. It is no wonder Charlotte’s Web is a timeless classic.

Relay by Roy Lieberman: Grades K through 3rd
I stumbled on this little gem and it is awesome. I recommend buying the actual book and not the Kindle version. The illustrations are incredible and add so much to the story. They aren’t near as vivid and don’t come to life on the Kindle.
Russ’s dad has lost his keys again and Russ saw it all happen. He wants to tell his dad the story, but dad is a bit leary since the last incident had him finding his slippers in the dishwasher. Relay takes you into a world of make believe when miniature construction vehicles enter the home to relocate the keys. They are lifted and hauled by tiny cranes and carried upstairs by a large three-legged piece of equipment.
Relay is an imaginative and creative story for little ones who enjoy a little treasure hunt and construction equipment.

Ballet Shoes by Noel Streatfeild: Ages 8 – 12, Grades 3-7
One of my favorite movies is “You’ve Got Mail.” Do you remember the scene in the movie where a mom steps into the Fox megstore and is looking for the “shoe books” for her daughter? Meg Ryan’s character interrupts and talks of the books and tells her to start with Ballet Shoes, it’s her favorite. So, I started with Ballet Shoes and what a sweet book. Written and published back in 1936, Ballet Shoes is the first book in the shoes series.
Three orphan girls are adopted by G.U.M (Great-Uncle Matthew) an adventurer who brings the girls home after he is out fossil hunting. He leaves the girls at his home to be raised by his nephew’s widow and her adult daughter, Sylvia. The girls take the last name of Fossil and are raised as sister’s. Pauline, Petrova and Posy find their loves, passions and talents and use them to go to work to help save the family when they are faced with financial ruin. The girls make a pact, “we vow to try and put our name in history books because it’s our very own and nobody can say it’s because of our grandfather’s.” To follow their journey and read as these girls set out to make their vow a reality is pure joy.

I will be writing again soon with the review of another fabulous Liane Moriarty novel.

Until next next time,
Bee Readin,
Terri

  1. I love the quote on the right. In the past I’ve done just that, but these days I quickly abandon a book if it doesn’t appeal to me. There are just too many good books out there to read and not enough time. Love your list. Sometimes it is fun reading Children’s or Young Adult books.

    1. Jolandi, I too use to force myself to finish a book, but life is getting shorter everyday and I don’t want to waste time on a book I am struggling to finish. I have thoroughly enjoyed going back and reading a children’s book and Young Adult books. Just finished another Young Adult book, that was fantastic. Now it is back to reading adult stories. I find when I read the children’s books or Young Adult, it sparks some creativity in me. Hope you are well. Can’t wait to read the next blog posts. Take care!

    1. Janet, thanks for letting me know your favorite. I have added it to my list. I also want to let you know that my recommendation for your backcountry adventure, while I have several. I am thinking the Ladybug Farm series by Donna Ball. I loved the series, it is light reading, but an adventure with 3 women who sell everything and buy this rundown farm in Virginia. They are a joy and their adventures are quirky and fun. I am reading them again in a book club with my mother-in-law and she is loving them also. I will keep thinking and will let you know other’s I come up with. Take Care!
