I hope you all had a beautiful Thanksgiving filled with delicious food, family, friends and a lot to be thankful for.
The Bookshop of Yesterdays by Amy Meyerson is a story of family secrets, the love of books, dysfunction, discovery, and a quirky book community. The Bookshop of Yesterdays by Amy Meyerson was engaging and a joy to read.
Eleven year old Miranda Brooks grew up in what seemed like a normal home with two parents and love from her eccentric Uncle Billy.
Billy spends time when he can with Miranda. He takes her on adventures, scavenger hunts and the two spend time getting lost in books at the bookstore Billy owns. Miranda treasures the time she spends with her uncle.
On Miranda’s twelve birthday, Uncle Billy picks Miranda up to spend the day with his favorite birthday girl. But upon their return home, Miranda’s mother and her brother Billy have a massive argument. Billy storms out and Miranda will soon learn she will never see Billy again, but why?
Fast forward years down the road. Miranda has graduated from college, has a serious boyfriend, is teaching school and living on the East coast, far from Los Angeles where she grew up.
The day starts out like any other day, but Miranda quickly learns that her Uncle Billy has passed away, and he left her his bookstore, Prospero Books. Miranda jumps on a plane and flies home to Los Angeles with the intention of staying a few days. When she arrives there is tension between her and her mother, but she stays at home for a few short days while she decides her next steps.
From the moment Miranda steps through the door at Prospero Books she is met with strange looks, the employees are peculiar, and stand-offish. They aren’t helpful to her in learning the store. She feels very lost.
It doesn’t take long for Miranda to discover the store is in serious financial trouble. She extends her stay in California, determined to find a way to make Prospero Books a success and continue her Uncle Billy’s legacy. She continues to extend her stay, struggles to connect with the employees and learns that her Uncle Billy has left her one last scavenger hunt.
Miranda will have to comb through the pages of classic novels to find the clues he left hidden. The hunt will take Miranda to unexpected people, new friends, the uncovering of dark family secrets and a life she never expected.
Amy Meyerson brings these complex characters brilliantly to life while weaving a mystery throughout the pages.
The Bookshop of Yesterdays was an unexpected gem. A book and story you won’t want to close the cover on. I was hooked after the first few pages and hope you are too.
Until next time, I hope you’ll Bee Readin’.
